Also known as Pohutukawa, Maori Princess Pohutukawa and New Zealand Christmas Tree. A reasonably hardy, evergreen tree that produces a mass of deep crimson flowers that begin to emerge in December and through into January, which attract nectar-feeding birds. Has an upright, conical growth habit and are suitable for growing in coastal and urban situations. Prefers full sun and average type soils that are free-draining. Responds well to trimming so may used to form hedges and screens, ideal as a specimen tree too.
